OVERRUN BY RATS
The saying that ‘you are never more than 6 feet away from a rat’ is over 100 years old, and very misleading. In truth its pretty rare for rats to be inside our property. Rats frequently infest public tips, warehouses, anywhere there’s an easy meal or a comfortable nesting site.
Just like mice, rats can cause costly damage to your property, gnaw food packaging and carry disease in to your home. They are nocturnal and scurry around out of sight, but will leave evidence of their presence in the form of droppings or shredded paper or cardboard.
DEALING WITH RATS
Finding evidence of rat activity in your property should be acted upon immediately. Rats breed very quickly and, where there are no predators, numbers can grow out of control.
Rat droppings are 1.5-2 cm in length, brown or black in colour and torpedo shaped, and bite marks on even wood and concrete will be evidence of a rat presence. Rats pose a serious health risk so swift action by a Crest technician should be sought.
HOW TO IDENTIFY
Rats are much larger than a house mouse, typically reaching between 5 to 10 inches in body length, with the tail as much again. Brown rats are good swimmers, so living next to water can make you more susceptible to having rats close by.
